University Career Services (UCS) is the central career center and supports all students in all majors and all class levels. It is a comprehensive career center and includes career assessment and career counseling to help with career decisions, professional development activities in preparation for internship, job, and graduate school searches, and recruitment events. UCS staff work with undergraduate and graduate students from the first year on campus through the one-year anniversary of their graduation. Alumni beyond a year of graduation may enroll in Alumni Career Services, a program also housed within UCS. (Note: an Alumni Career Services fee is associated with some services).
UCS is an integral component of Georgia State’s innovative College to Career initiative. Through this, students become aware of their career possibilities and the actions required to navigate toward them, understand the connections between their coursework and career goals, and can demonstrate their career readiness competencies. To do this, several resources and services are available.
Career Development such as career counseling, mock interviews, and action planning are available by appointment. Career counselors also provide career assessments, which aid students in exploring career possibilities based on values, interests, and personality. Career counselors are available to help students and alumni with career exploration to select a major and link their talents, skills, and interests to their career goals. Students may drop in without an appointment for a 15-minute resume review and basic job search. In addition, workshops are held for professional development activities. These are offered both in-person and virtually.
Recruiting includes programs and activities that connect students and alumni to employers for internship and career opportunities, as well as employment to meet expenses while attending school. Several career fairs including on-campus jobs, all majors, technology, internship, and graduate school are held each year. The innovative Who What Wednesdays provide opportunities to meet employers in a casual setting.
The Cooperative Education and Internships program helps students prepare for in-depth co-op and internship learning experiences, which build skills and strengthen students’ competitiveness for future opportunities. The program also works with colleges and employers in supporting their co-op and internship initiatives.
The Graduate and Professional School Planning program assists students exploring advanced degree opportunities, either at Georgia State University or at another institution within the United States or abroad. The UCS staff will assist students in researching programs as well as support in preparing application materials. This program also sponsors the fall Graduate and Professional School Fair, which brings graduate school recruiters from across the country to meet interested Georgia State students.
The Career Resource Center (CRC) is the central point of contact for students. Students may walk in without an appointment to use the workstations, informally consult with peer student advisors, and work on their own. Career Drop-Ins are open Monday through Friday, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. No appointment is needed, and students are seen on a first-come first-serve basis. During drop-in hours, students may work on their resumes and cover letters, ask questions regarding major selection, job search and related career questions.
For headshots to use on LinkedIn profiles and other professional media, students may use the Iris photobooth. Georgia State was the first university in the country to have such a booth and make it available to students. Photos come directly to the student’s email to be used in any appropriate way by the student. This is free of charge.
To ensure professional dress, UCS houses a career closet with clothing donated from faculty, staff, alumni, and friends of the university. Students may select clothing for interviews, networking, and any other professional need, and it is theirs to keep. This is free of charge. The career closet can also be accessed online with single sign on at gsucareercloset.com.
All Georgia State University students have an account on Handshake (gsu.joinhandshake.com), a web- and app-based career management system used by students, employers, and the career services staff. Handshake is free to all enrolled students. Activation of the account (completing a profile and uploading a resume if seeking employment) provides 24/7 on and off-campus access to many of the Career Resource Center’s online resources, as well as easy application to jobs, and information about career events and employers. Students can also make appointments with a career counselor. Students can activate their account with their campus ID and password from anywhere and may download the app.
