1512 Office of the Dean of Students

Return to: 1500 Student Life and Services

1512.10 Student Assistance

The Office of the Dean of Students is dedicated to student success and retention through providing services that undergird students who are experiencing critical barriers to their academic and personal success and by facilitating students’ understanding and use of university systems and resources. Knowledgeable staff assist and empower students in conducting their university affair by listening and analyzing students’ issues, questions, or concerns, talking with students to help devise a problem-solving strategy and referring students to appropriate staff members and departments.

For more information, visit the Office of the Dean of Students website, deanofstudents.gsu.edu, or email deanofstudents@gsu.edu.

1512.20 Financial and Emergency Assistance

Georgia State Financial Hardship and Emergency Assistance supports students in overcoming unforeseen hardships that hinder their successful academic progress. Consideration for financial support is a last-resort option after all other applicable financial aid awards and/or community resources are exhausted. Funds can cover documented school-related expenses (for example, tuition, fees, room, board, books, etc.) and/or other basic needs (for example, food, housing, childcare, transportation, etc.).

The Office of the Dean of Students also provides assistance to students who have experienced an emergency circumstance which prevents them from attending class by coordinating with relevant campus resources to support the student’s successful return to the university. In the event a student is hospitalized and unable to contact their professors, the professors can be notified of the absence so that, upon returning to the university, the student can follow up with their professors to complete any missed assignments. If the student is unable to remain enrolled due to the nature of the emergency situation, the student can receive guidance and assistance regarding the emergency withdrawal process.

For more information, visit the Office of the Dean of Students website, deanofstudents.gsu.edu, or email deanofstudents@gsu.edu.

1512.30 Student Conduct

The Georgia State University Student Code of Conduct contains policies and procedures that promote the university mission and protect the rights of students, faculty and staff. Students are obligated to be knowledgeable of and to comply with the university’s rules, policies and procedures. Students are also individually responsible for understanding and exercising their rights, fulfilling their obligations and respecting the rights of others. The Student Code of Conduct articulates the types of actions that infringe upon the campus climate of civility and the academic integrity of the university. An overarching philosophy of the student conduct process is to provide students with the opportunity to reflect upon their actions, take responsibility for the outcomes of their life and to develop ethical approaches to their decision making process. A copy of the most current Student Code of Conduct may be accessed on the web at codeofconduct.gsu.edu.
