Student Civic Engagement prepares students for their public lives as citizens, members of communities, and professionals in society by providing service opportunities and programming that respond to societal issues and concerns. In this work, Student Civic Engagement consults with students, student organizations, faculty and staff concerning community service opportunities and partnerships. Student Civic Engagement hosts a variety of signature community service events throughout the year including Panther Plunge, Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week, MLK Day of Service, GSU Cares Day, and Earth Day.
Students can easily explore service opportunities, and track their engagement through GSU’s volunteer management system, PawsforaCause. Students and student organizations that engage in service projects and log their hours in PawsforaCause are able to create a permanent record of their service hours and as well as qualify for local and national recognition.
Student Civic Engagement manages the Community Impact Corps, a federal work study program in which students work in a non-profit setting. Student’s work positively impacts the community while giving the student exposure to a non-profit setting and professional experience. Students can apply year round.
Panther Breakaway, another one of Civic Engagement’s signature programs, offers students the opportunity to spend their academic breaks in service to others. In the past, students have worked in various locations around the southeast and internationally, including Washington D.C., Florida, Tennessee, Louisiana and Costa Rica. Students are educated on a specific social issue prior to the trip and then immersed in the community where they complete service projects related to that specific issue. Previous trips have addressed social issues such as literacy, poverty, hunger, homelessness and environmental awareness.
