PHPB 7160 - Fundamentals of Health Systems, Leadership, and Policy 3 Credit Hours Description This course introduces and describes the fundamentals of the health care delivery system, health policy and public health leadership. The historical basis for the health care system’s organization will be discussed, contextualized within a social determinants of health framework, as well as the various modes of health care delivery and the ways health care is organized, financed and delivered in the United States. In addition to presenting the foundations of health care organization, the course will include an overview of health care reform and current challenges to the system. An introduction to the health policy cycle and key health policy frameworks and approaches will be covered. Principles of public health leadership and management, including negotiation/mediation and the use of coalition-building to influence public health outcomes and guide policy decision-making will be discussed. Students who complete the course will gain a basic understanding of the organization, functions, and delivery of health care by the many components of the U.S. health care system as well as a foundation in health policy and public health leadership and management.
