HIST 4655 - History of Madness

Description
This course explores the intellectual and cultural history of madness, from the eighteenth century to the twentieth. Themes include: shifting attitudes to mental illness; institutional management of the insane from the €œmad-house € to the mental hospital; the emergence of psychiatry as a modern scientific discipline; the discovery, and meaning, of new disorders; and the invention of new treatments from purging to Prozac.
