GLOS 3850 - China, India, and the Modern World Economy

(Same as HIST 3850). How to define and understand the modern world economy? What place did China and India have in it? This comparative global history course addresses these questions. It familiarizes students with the main characteristics of the world economy and the place and role of China and India in it. Prior to 1800, China and India were at the forefront of the world economy and since the early 19th century, Europe and North America have held a dominant position in it. Rapid economic growth in China and India since the early 1990s is indicative of a major reconfiguration in the world economy. This course offers historical and contemporary perspectives on the modern world economy and a comparative analysis of the role of states, markets, trade networks, economic institutions, commodity production, consumption, and socio-cultural values in the economies of China, India, and Europe/North America.
