Description
This course studies the history of Haiti, both before and after independence, and highlights the key themes and events in the country’s history. We will study the faltering beginnings of the colony under Spanish and then French control; the development of a lucrative economy based on slave labor and the export of agricultural commodities; the socio-racial hierarchy that this system produced; the world’s only successful slave revolution; the development of the second independent country in the Americas; the development of Haitian Voodoo and the Creole language; the invasion of Haiti by the American Marines in the twentieth century; the rise of the Duvalier dictatorships; the rise of poverty and foreign aid; and the devastating earthquake in 2010.
