This is an elective course. This course examines the intersection between international law, U.S. law, and U.S. foreign policy. It centers on case studies, including Guantanamo Bay and the torture memos, the U.S. posture towards the International Criminal Court, and the invasion of Iraq, alongside the international news of the day. By working through such controversies, students will be exposed to competing international and domestic interpretations of sovereignty, the use of force, the role of the Security Council, the authority of the International Court of Justice, and even the nature of international law itself.
