The study of music at Perimeter College helps students develop foundational skills in the classroom and on stage. Led by professional faculty, students learn theory and performance techniques and gain experience in the classical and jazz traditions through solo and ensemble performances.
The guided pathway in Music at Perimeter College has a proven record of preparing students for success in a variety of music-related fields. An artist faculty with a substantial background in performing, conducting, composition and arranging empowers students to critically analyze and effectively perform music of various styles and genres. A rich and varied calendar of recitals and concerts provides them with opportunities to perfect their own performing skills and to experience the skill of faculty and guest artist performers.
After completing the requisite coursework, students earn an Associate of Science degree and may transfer to a four-year college or university to complete a bachelor’s degree in fields such as music performance, music education, composition, music therapy, arts administration and audio engineering.

Music pathway students should take one of the following music appreciation (MUA) courses to satisfy their Arts, Humanities and Ethics (Fine Arts) requirement in Core IMPACTS.
- MUA 1930 - Music, Society, and Culture
- MUA 1500 - Jazz: Origins, Styles, Influences
Field of Study: Courses Appropriate to the Pathway (18 Credit Hours)
Students beginning the Music Pathway will complete music skills assessments administered by the music faculty. (Music Entrance Audition, Music Theory Entrance Exam) Based on the results of these assessments, students may be required to complete one or more of the following prerequisite courses before beginning their Field of Study courses: MUS 1430 Fundamentals of Music Theory, MUS 1530 Fundamentals of Aural Skills, MUA 1700 Beginning Piano, APXX 1000 Preparatory Major Applied Lessons.
Appropriate Large Ensemble (4 Credit Hours)
(4 semesters, 1 credit hour each) Students are assigned to appropriate ensembles at the beginning of each semester.
Concert Attendance (0 Credits, Four Semesters)
Tracks (14 Credit Hours)
Students should select one of the following three tracks:
Bachelor of Music Track
Students pursuing the following degrees should adhere to this track: Associate of Science in Music; Bachelor of Music degree in Performance, Education, Composition, or Jazz Studies; the Bachelor of Science in Music Industry/Audio Recording through the entrance audition track.
Music Production/Audio Recording or Music Administration Track
Students pursuing the Bachelor of Science in Music Production/Audio Recording (submitting a digital portfolio in lieu of audition) or the Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Studies in Arts Administration (Music) should adhere to this track.
Bachelor of Science in Music Management Track
Students pursuing the Bachelor of Science in Music Management should adhere to this track.
