Sociology and Gerontology, B.A.-M.A.

The department offers a dual Bachelor of Arts Sociology and Master of Arts in Gerontology. The dual degree opportunity enables qualified students to enroll in graduate courses late in their undergraduate program and apply the coursework toward both the bachelor’s and master’s programs.

Students must be formally accepted into the dual degree program by the department and College of Arts and Sciences to be able to take graduate courses as an undergraduate. Additionally, acceptance into the dual program does not constitute admission to the master’s program. Students must fulfill regular graduate admissions requirements and apply for the master’s program following college processes.

B.A. in Sociology / M.A. in Gerontology Dual Degree Application Requirements 

Applicants must be a Sociology major with a 3.5 overall GPA and successful completion of SOCI 3010 with a preferred final grade of A or better.  

B.A. in Sociology / M.A. in Gerontology Dual Degree Course Requirements 

Bachelor of Arts Sociology and Master of Arts in Gerontology Dual Degree Students can fulfill up to 12 credit hours of undergraduate Area G section: “3000/4000 Level SOCI - Select 15 Credits” and fulfill up to 12 credit hours of graduate credit by choosing from and successfully completing a combination of the following courses with a grade of B or better:  

Required Core Courses:

3 credit hours: GERO 8000 - Seminar in Gerontology
3 credit hours: GERO 8100 - Research Methods in Gerontology

Select two of the following Courses:

3 credit hours: GERO 7110 - Aging Policy and Services
3 credit hours: GERO 7200 - Health and the Older Adult
3 credit hours: GERO 8116 - Sociology of Aging
3 credit hours: GERO 8320 - Psychology of Aging
3 credit hours: GERO 8124 - Diversity and Aging

No more than 12 graduate course credits or four graduate courses taken as an undergraduate student will be used at the undergraduate or graduate level, depending on the program’s requirements.
