World Languages Teacher Education, B.I.S.

The Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Studies (B.I.S.) concentration in World Languages Teacher Education provides students an opportunity to further develop their skills and knowledge in French or Spanish language, culture, and literary skills while completing requirements to be recommended for K-12 teaching certification to the Georgia Professional Standards Commission. World language educators completing the program will be prepared to support multilingual speakers in urban environments to value diverse perspectives and language varieties and to act as responsible global citizens. 

Program Admission

Students are required to apply for teacher education after completing undergraduate Core IMPACTS  and Field of Study courses. 

To be accepted into teacher education. students must:

  • Have a 2.50 overall grade point average on all undergraduate coursework previously completed;
  • Complete the Georgia Educator Ethics Assessment (360);
  • Successfully complete undergraduate Core IMPACTS  and Field of Study courses;
  • Successfully complete all courses required for the Communication in Writing and Mathematics and Quantitative Skills sections of Core IMPACTS  and all Field of Study courses with a grade of “C” or higher; and
  • Participate in an interview and/or provide writing sample as a part of the application process.

Program Financial Information

B.I.S. majors must pay all tuition and fees charged by the university and the college. A lab fee of $125 will be charged at the time students register for the student teaching experience. Educator preparation students must be aware that extra costs such as tort liability and transportation will be incurred at various times during the completion of various teacher education field experiences, particularly during the students’ senior year. 

Program Academic Regulations

Pre-Service Certificate: Upon admission to a teacher education program, students will be contacted by the Office of Field Placements and Certification with instructions to claim enrollment in their program and submit a GaPSC Pre-Service Certificate Application. The pre-service certificate is required for placement in required field experiences or clinical practice.

Certification: Students must post passing scores on the GACE Content Assessments and Georgia Educator Ethics Assessment (360) in order to be recommended by Georgia State University for clear, renewable certification.

For Georgia Professional Standards Commission (GaPSC) certification requirements, students must earn a grade of “B” or higher in EXC 4020    Characteristics and Instructional Strategies for Students with Disabilities.

Core IMPACTS (42-43 Hours)

Field of Study: Preparation for the Major (18 Hours)


Choose 9 Hours


Majors must achieve competence at the intermediate level before beginning courses at the 3000 level. They may demonstrate competence through placement exam scores, including the CLEP exam, prior study, or courses taken at Georgia State University

Major Courses: Content Disciplines (24 Hours)


Students select 24 hours of language, culture, and literature coursework in French or Spanish. BIS students can substitute up to nine credits of graduate-level French or Spanish courses with faculty program coordinator approval for the required undergraduate language courses.

 

French Language Teaching


The French Language Teaching discipline consists of 24 hours (eight courses) on the 3000/4000 level. Prerequisite for all courses at the 3000 level is FREN 2002 . Prerequisite for all courses at the 4000 level is the completion of the three courses at the 3000 level.

Spanish Language Teaching


The Spanish Language Teaching discipline consists of 24 hours (eight courses) on the 3000/4000 level. Prerequisite for all courses at the 4000 level is the successful completion of 3303 and at least one other course at the 3000 level.

Select One Course (3 Hours)

Additional Courses (15 Hours)

  • 3 Hours: SPAN 3301  Oral Communication in Spanish: Topics in Language and Culture (3) (non-native speakers only; others must take an additional course at the 3000-4000 level)
  • 3 Hours: a 4000-level Culture course 
  • 6 Hours: Two literature and/or culture courses above SPAN 3314
  • 3 Hours: An additional course in Spanish at the 3000-4000 level (3). SPAN 3308   Introduction to Spanish Linguistics is recommended.

Major Courses: Core Knowledge (6 Hours)


Students must earn a grade of “B” or higher in each course used to fulfill Core Knowledge course requirements.

Major Courses: Pedagogical Knowledge (18 Hours)


World Languages Teacher Education Certification Field Work requires an ACTFL Oral Proficiency Interview minimum score of Intermediate High prior to starting fieldwork (EDCI 4600). Students request fieldwork placement and submit ACTFL proficiency score to the program coordinator the semester prior to field placement.

Students must earn a grade of “B” or higher in each course used to fulfill Pedagogical Knowledge course requirements.

Electives (12 Hours)


Students can take courses numbered 1000 or above to fulfill the elective requirement. Suggested coursework includes: 3000/4000 level language courses to further proficiency, Urban Endorsement coursework, Dual Language Immersion coursework, or ESOL coursework.

Total Program: Minimum of 120 Semester Hours
