The B.A. in World Languages and Cultures offers students a program of study that focuses on career readiness through an innovative curriculum and experiential learning opportunities. Our curriculum emphasizes intercultural competency that is required across all professions in the 21st century.

With courses for developing world language proficiency, multicultural literacies, and college to career connection, the goal of the program is to cultivate the next generation of a workforce that can compete globally. Graduates will be able to pursue varied career pathways in business, government, non-profit organizations, and other enterprises with an international scope.

Degree Requirements (120 Hours)

In addition to courses in the major, students are advised to choose courses in other areas that complement their study. Such courses include history, philosophy, art and music, business, and education, etc. Faculty mentors in the department are eager to discuss students’ academic plans as they design their course of study.

In addition to the Program Degree Requirements, students must fulfill the College of Arts and Sciences Degree Requirements (see 3000 College of Arts and Sciences ) and the University Degree Requirements (see 1400 University Degree Requirements and Graduation n).

University Grade-Point Average and Grade Requirements

Georgia State University undergraduate students must achieve an overall institutional grade-point average of 2.0 and a major GPA of 2.0 in the Major and Additional Courses areas to receive a bachelor’s degree from the university. Grades of C- can be used to satisfy graduation requirements. However, some courses have prerequisites that require a grade of C or higher. (See 1460 GPA Requirement for additional information.)

Choose one from the following list:

ARBC through the 2002 level
CHIN through the 2002 level
FREN through the 2002 level
GRMN through the 2002 level
JAPN through the 2002 level
KORE through the 2002 level
SPAN through the 2002 level

Majors must achieve competence at the intermediate level (i.e., the 2000 level) before beginning courses at the 3000 level. They may demonstrate competence through placement exam scores, including the CLEP exam, prior study, or courses taken at Georgia State University.

Field Electives

Select additional elective courses to complete 18 hours in the Field of Study Area. Options include the following:

A second language (3-9 credit hours from the list of required courses above through the 2002 level). This option is recommended for students seeking to teach world languages or in the twin-language concentration.
Additional 2000-level world language course beyond 2002.

The World Languages Department at Perimeter College strongly encourages students who plan to pursue a career in teaching languages to select a second language.
A student may not receive credit for any 1001-level world languages course if the student has had two years of that language in high school.
