This is a four (4) course, 12-credit hour Certificate Program. This Certificate Program is open to all Bachelor degree seeking students at GSU. College of Business majors require a 2.0 GSU GPA or higher, and 45 semester hours in Area F. Non-College of Business majors require a 2.0 GSU GPA or higher, 45 semester hours, and BUSA 3090 or permission of the instructor. The program in Risk Management and Insurance prepares qualified and motivated students for positions in risk management and in insurance. The Certificate in Risk Management and Insurance utilizes courses in the RMI major and minor, and is open to all Bachelor degree seeking GSU students regardless of their college or major. The curriculum will provide an overview of the foundations and principles of insurance, fundamentals of business risk management, the personal insurance coverages for automobile, homeowners, life insurance and others, and survey of commercial insurance coverage for property, general liability and professional liability.
A student with knowledge of risk management and insurance fundamentals will find an easier time gaining entry to the job opportunities in this growing field of corporate risk management, insurance underwriting and claims and brokerage, and insurance regulatory compliance. There are an estimated 400,000 insurance and risk jobs opening in the next 10 years due to retirements in the workforce.
The insurance industry provides for careers in multiple fields, some directly involving the fundamental principles of insurance such as underwriting, brokerage and claims, and many more the support the business such as marketing, accounting, finance, investments, regulatory compliance, technology, data analytics, human resources, etc.
