Legal Analytics & Innovation Certificate

The way that law is practiced is changing rapidly. Technological advances have undoubtedly changed how we practice law. From administrative procedures to ethical considerations to new and exciting doctrinal areas, understanding how technology impacts the practice of law is essential for any future-ready legal professional. The Certificate in Legal Analytics & Innovation, offered through the College of Law Legal Analytics & Innovation Initiative, gives students an edge in this exciting area.

Students are able to pursue the Certificate in Legal Analytics & Innovation through either the Legal Analytics or Technology and Innovation paths.

Certificate Requirements


All certificate students must take Law 7333, Intro to Legal Technology & Innovation. In addition, students can then choose to satisfy the certificate through one of two paths: Legal Analytics or Technology & Innovation.

Legal Analytics Path Required Courses


Legal Analytics Capstone Experience


  • 3 Credit Hours
  • or

  • Independent Study of a Legal Analytics topic under faculty supervision as approved by the Executive Director or the Faculty Director of the Legal Analytics and Innovation Initiative. 2 Credit Hours

Non-Credit Workshop Series


  • Georgia State University Library Research Data Services (RDS) “Data Certified” certificate
    • Or
  • A workshop series of comparable rigor and skill development as the RDS Data Certified Certificate above, as approved by the Executive Director or the Faculty Director of the Legal Analytics and Innovation Initiative.

Technology and Innovation Path


The Technology & Innovation Path will allow students to gain a broad familiarity in Legal Technology, Law and Technology, and Legal Analytics to prepare them as future-ready lawyers. Students will develop a sophisticated knowledge of how technologies, systems, and innovation affect and progress the practice of law, and how to use, implement, and evaluate these technologies.

Required Technology and Innovation Courses


Technology and Innovation Capstone Experience


  • 2 Credit Hours
  • Independent Study of a legal tech, analytics, or innovation topic under faculty supervision as approved by the Executive Director or the Faculty Director of the Legal Analytics and Innovation Initiative. 2 Credit Hours

Elective Courses


Elective Courses - Both the Legal Analytics and Technology and Innovation Paths.

In addition to the required courses, students will choose from a variety of approved electives to complete a total of 16 certificate hours (for example, if 9 credit hours are completed with required courses, an additional 7 elective hours are required). Other electives may be applied with approval by the Executive Director or the Faculty Director of the Legal Analytics and Innovation Initiative. Note: Courses designated as a requirement for your path CANNOT count as elective credit for purposes of completing the certificate.

Additional Courses


(upon approval)

  • We will work with students to treat additional seminars or upper-level classes as Certificate electives if there is significant overlap.

Writing Requirement


For both the Legal Analytics and Technology and Innovation Paths.

Students must complete a substantial writing project on a Legal Analytics & Innovation topic, which may also be used to satisfy the College of Law’s writing requirement.

Extracurricular Activity


Students are encouraged to participate in legal analytics extracurricular activities such as: workshops and boot camp training sessions hosted at the College of Law or Robinson College of Business, participate in additional client-focused data projects (“sprints”), work with affiliated faculty as a Graduate Assistant and/or pursue internship placements as they become available.

Grades


A minimum GPA of 3.00 is required across all courses taken in satisfaction of the certificate requirements, including the writing requirement. Honors will be awarded for achievement of a GPA of 3.60 or higher in all Legal Analytics & Innovation courses taken for the certificate.
