WGSS 4860 - Womanist Ethnography

3 Credit Hours

Description
This upper-level course introduces qualitative research from feminist and womanist perspectives, examining ethnographic case studies of religious communities alongside methodology and ethics. Weekly debates will address ethical dilemmas in ethnographic research, such as author positioning, storytelling genres, target audiences, and commitments to social change. Students will conduct research on topics of their choice through “mini-ethnography” assignments, practicing participatory observation, interviews, and documentation. The course emphasizes womanist and feminist ethnography centered on Black diasporic experiences and fosters a commitment to justice, ownership of assumptions, and intellectual growth.
