Comparative examination of systems of captivity and forced labor in the western hemisphere and the social development and popular responses of captive Africans and their descendants to these systems. Emphasis on the continuities of African culture and the unique adaptation of culture and social organization in each country. The nature of resistance and the process of eliminating the system of captivity, with a focus on Maroon nations in the Americas. Global Scholars course.
