ENGL 3230 - History of Literary and Cultural Theory

Pre/Corequisites: Prerequisites: ENGL 1102 and either ENGL 2120 or ENGL 2130 with a C or higher.
Description
Monuments of western literary criticism in the context of questions raised by recent literary theory. We discuss major works of literary criticism and theory from Plato to New Criticism, including analysis of Aristotle, Sidney, Samuel Johnson, Wordsworth, Kant, Hegel, Marx, Nietzsche, Arnold, Freud, Jung, Woolf, De Beauvoir, and others. We will focus on comprehension of challenging texts while also reframing classical problems of criticism and theory in light of recent theoretical developments.Global Scholars course.
