An interdisciplinary, comparative history of ideas about race, ethnicity, and human variation from the 17th century to the present, with emphasis on the social interactions, historical contexts, and social conflicts that produced those ideas. “Race” is primarily a Western historical construction, but the course also compares race with other systems for defining “natural” or “in-born” differences, such as ethnicity, religion, caste, or class.
