Same as PHIL 3530. (Same as Phil 3530.) A survey of the historical writings in political thought from Plato to Machiavelli. Special emphasis on the contributions these thinkers made to Western conceptions of democracy, equality, human nature, citizenship, etc., as well as the continuing relevance of the texts for explaining contemporary political phenomena.
