The Graduate Certificate in Interdisciplinary Early Intervention Rehabilitation is a 9-credit hour program of study that will also include an interdisciplinary practicum placement with infants and young children (these clinical placements are already part of each discipline; each program will ensure the student is placed in the proper setting/environment) and participation in an interdisciplinary learning community that will include completion of the Family, Infant, and Preschool Program (FIPP) modules and supplemental interdisciplinary learning and mentoring experiences. Students who are current students of Department of Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, and Communication Sciences and Disorders in GSU can apply for this certificate program.

Program Degree Regulations

All accepted students will complete graduate degree requirements within their individual disciplines (exiting courses within each department). They will take three additional three-credit-hour interdisciplinary courses that are being developed for this certificate:

  1. Family Centered Care in Early Childhood Systems, 3 credit hours (Fall)
  2. Evidence-Based Practice for Early Childhood Interventions, 3 credit hours (Fall); and
  3. Teaming and Collaboration within Early Childhood Systems, 3 credit hours, (Spring)

These courses will be listed in the Physical Therapy department, and cross-listed in the Occupation Therapy and College of Education and Human Development. All accepted students will also complete a summer intensive orientation, a pediatric clinical (8-10 weeks), and an interdisciplinary professional learning community (Interdisciplinary EI Academy).

Program Academic Regulations

  1. Meet each disciplines’ requirements to graduate with a Master of Science in Communication Sciences and Disorders, or Doctor of Physical Therapy, or Doctor of Occupational Therapy.
  2. Receive a grade of >80% in the three certificate courses.
  3. Receive a grade of S on the pediatric clinical.
  4. Demonstrate effective oral and written communication skills in working in a patient-centered interdisciplinary team.
  5. Critically evaluate the literature for best evidence-based practices in early intervention.
  6. Demonstrate professional behaviors and adhere to all professional responsibilities and discipline-specific code of ethics in patient/family care.
