Actuarial science is a discipline that applies mathematical and statistical methods to assess and manage financial risks, particularly within the insurance and finance industries. It involves analyzing past data to predict future outcomes and develop strategies to mitigate potential financial losses.
Actuaries have been called financial architects and social mathematicians because of their unique blend of analytical and business skills in the insurance and financial services industries. They serve as consultants in firms that specialize in employee benefits and pensions, in the government sector, and in a variety of other roles.
Importantly, students may be interested to know:
(a) the job outlook for Actuaries is very strong and is expected to grow much faster than the average for all occupations, (b) the median salary for actuaries is very high compared to other careers, (c) the Associate’s degree in Actuarial Science will allow a student to complete the first actuarial exam and thus gain employment and/or internships at many companies, (d) students who graduate with the Actuarial Science Associate degree will be able to transfer to the downtown Georgia State University campus or other Universities which offer Bachelor degrees in Actuarial Science, (e) Georgia State University’s Department of Risk Management and Insurance, in which Actuarial Science is housed, is ranked #1 in North America for research productivity and is the only Center of Actuarial Excellence in the Southeast, and (f) a student can complete the Actuarial Science pathway in 2 years.
