ECE 6387 - Language Acquisition: Creating Linguistically Sustaining Classrooms 3 Credit Hours Requirements: A minimum grade of “C” is required for this course.
Description This course is designed to prepare teacher candidates to be successful and reflective teachers of linguistically diverse students in urban classrooms, particularly those who are learning English as a Second Language. The course will focus on three dimensions of teaching: Knowledge of language, knowledge of self & students, and knowledge of linguistically responsive assessment and teaching practices. Candidates will examine theories and processes of first and second language acquisition and linguistic socialization. They will use a variety of strategies to learn about students’ linguistic and academic development and learning landscape at school and to assess student learning. They will plan and implement linguistically responsive instruction that provides linguistic differentiation and scaffolding appropriate to students’ WIDA English Language Development Levels.
