EXC 7010 - Assessment and Structured Literacy Instruction in Word Reading for Students with Dyslexia and Other Reading Disabilities 3 Credit Hours Description This course prepares educators to provide structured literacy instruction in word reading and spelling for students with or at-risk for word-level reading difficulties (WLRD), including dyslexia. This course is designed to teach the fundamental principles and concepts of the structure of language, with a focus on phonemic awareness and phonics. Students learn the sound-symbol correspondences of language and understand the relationship of phonemic awareness and the phonological system of language to the reading process. Students will learn evidence-based practices for teaching structured word reading and spelling (i.e., beginning word reading and spelling, advanced word reading and spelling, multisyllabic word reading and spelling) to students with WLRD. Students will learn how to assess these areas of reading, interpret assessment results, communicate findings, and use results to plan for instruction.
