PHPH 7265 - Epidemiology and the Prevention of Violence

3 Credit Hours
Description
This course examines the public health approach to the prevention of interpersonal and self-directed violence. This approach has four steps: Defining the problem; identifying the risk and protective factors; developing interventions or policies to address the problem; and, broadly implementing effective intervention and prevention programs. This includes a focus on scientific research which is essential for developing effective intervention and prevention programs. With these basic precepts as the underpinnings of the course, the areas of violence prevention to be covered are: child maltreatment, youth violence, intimate partner and sexual violence, elder abuse, and suicidal behavior.
