EPHE 8100 - College and University Administration

Description
The origins and development of the American system of higher education will be examined from a historical perspective. Students will gain an understanding of the differentiated missions of both public and private institutions ranging from community colleges to research universities. The evolution of highly specialized administrative structures and professional career paths associated with modern college administration will also be traced. Challenges and trends impacting the 21st century college and university will be explored. Topical areas will include institutional administrative/organizational structure; finance/development; institutional governance; risk/crisis management; changing demographics; the expanding role of contracted service providers and the threats / opportunities posed by an increasingly competitive and often asynchronous environment for higher education. Case studies will illuminate leadership dilemmas encountered by college administrators.
