EPHE 8450 - Higher Education Finance

Description
Leaders in all areas of higher education administration are responsible for exercising good stewardship of all resources (financial, capital, personnel) entrusted to their oversight. An understanding of the principles of budgetary management and financial planning is critical to successfully acquitting the leadership role. This course will acquaint students with theories and practices related to sound financial management, a range of budgetary models, their application and relative strengths, and the field of institutional advancement (fundraising). Through the completion of assignments and participation in practical exercises, students will become acquainted with basic accounting principles and will develop the ability to analyze financial reports. Topical areas to be covered include income, expenses, capital assets, budgets, financial reports , grants and contracts, indirect costs, differences in the management of appropriated, mandatory fee, grant and auxiliary operations, physical plant operations (including repair, replacement and maintenance issues), institutional debt, financial foundations (alumni/development/research/athletic) and current trends including outsourcing operations and services.
