EPHE 8470 - Student Affairs Administration

Description
The origins and development of the modern student affairs profession will be examined from a historical perspective. Students will gain an understanding of the theoretical underpinnings of practice, the role and interrelationship of the highly specialized administrative and organizational structures serving students and the professional career paths associated with student affairs administration. Challenges and trends impacting the 21st century college and university will be explored with a focus upon how each of these phenomena challenge and impact the decisions of student affairs administrators. Topical areas will include changing demographics in the academic community, the student success imperative, institutional administrative/organizational structure; finance/development; institutional governance; risk/crisis management; multiculturalism, LGBTQ and gender issues, the expanding role of contracted service providers, practical issues of universal design, program evaluation, outcomes assessment and the legal, regulatory and political context impacting decision making. Case studies will illuminate leadership dilemmas encountered by student affairs professionals.
