The Department of Middle and Secondary Education prepares educators and other professionals for teaching, research and leadership in a range of disciplines and concentrations. Students, faculty and staff share a commitment to social justice and a special emphasis on serving the urban environment and ensuring that people from diverse cultural, ethnic and linguistic backgrounds have equal access to meaningful learning opportunities. Graduates of the department’s bachelor’s and master of arts in teaching programs are qualified to work as certified teachers in their disciplines. The department’s master of education and master of science graduates become master teachers and reading specialists. The ESOL and reading endorsements allow certified teachers to gain specific areas of expertise. The Ph.D. and Ed.D. degrees prepare individuals for careers as faculty members and researchers in higher education or as professionals who conduct research and provide leadership in business, industry, schools or other community settings.
