Program Degree Requirements


In addition to courses in the major, students are advised to choose courses in other areas that complement their study. Such courses include history, philosophy, art and music, business, and education, etc. Faculty mentors in the department are eager to discuss students’ academic plans as they design their course of study.

In addition to the Program Degree Requirements, students must fulfill the College of Arts and Sciences Degree Requirements (see College Degree Requirements) and the University Degree Requirements (see 1400 University Degree Requirements and Graduation).

University Grade-Point Average and Grade Requirements


Georgia State University undergraduate students must achieve an overall institutional grade-point average of 2.0 and a major GPA of 2.0 in Areas G and H to receive a bachelor’s degree from the university. Grades of C- can be used to satisfy graduation requirements. However, some courses have prerequisites that require a grade of C or higher. (See GPA Requirement for additional information.)

Area F: Courses Appropriate to the Major (18 hours)


Required Courses (0-9 Credit Hours)


Choose one from the following list:

  • ARBC through the 2002 level
  • CHIN through the 2002 level
  • FREN through the 2002 level 
  • GRMN through the 2002 level
  • JAPN through the 2002 level
  • KORE through the 2002 level
  • SPAN through the 2002 level

Majors must achieve competence at the intermediate level (i.e., the 2000 level) before beginning courses at the 3000 level. They may demonstrate competence through placement exam scores, including the CLEP exam, prior study, or courses taken at Georgia State University.

Select additional elective courses to complete 18 hours in Area F


Options to complete 18 hours in Area F include:

  • A second language (3-9 credit hours from the list of required courses above through the 2002 level). This option is recommended for students seeking to teach world languages or in the twin-language concentration.
  • Additional 2000-level world language course beyond 2002.
