Students seeking this degree and concentration are offered a broad range of courses that prepare students for research and professional careers that employ geographic methods, perspectives, and expertise. A wide range of areas of specialization in geography include: urban geography, geospatial science, physical geography, environmental studies, and human geography

Our Geography students find internship and employment opportunities in a diverse range of sectors including local and regional planning agencies; federal, state, and municipal governments; nongovernmental organizations and community-based advocacy groups; as well as private industry and corporations. Applications and internship qualifications can be obtained from the department. Thirty-six hours are required for completion of this degree. Further information is provided at geosciences.gsu.edu.

Concentration Requirements

Thesis Track (Minimum of 36 Hours)

Satisfactory completion of:

Group I: Department Requirements (16 Hours)

Take all courses from Group I:

GEOS 8002 - Geoscience Research Methods 3 Credit Hours
GEOS 6095 - Colloquium in the Geosciences 1 Credit Hours
GEOS 8999 - Thesis Research 1 to 9 Credit Hours (only 9 hours can count towards the 36 hour program of study)
Proficiency in a world language or an approved research skill - requirement can be fulfilled by taking an approved course or by taking an examination.
Successfully defend thesis in public presentation

Group II: Core Required Geography Courses (3 Hours)

Take all courses from Group II:

GEOS 8006 - Survey of Geographic Thought 3 Credit Hours

Group III: Methods and Techniques (Minimum 6 Hours)

Select two courses from Group III:

GEOS 6515 - Qualitative Methods in Geography 3 Credit Hours
GEOS 6518 - Digital Cartography 3 Credit Hours
GEOS 6520 - Quantitative Spatial Analysis 3 Credit Hours
GEOS 6530 - Introduction to Remote Sensing 4 Credit Hours
GEOS 6532 - Introduction to Geographic Information Systems 4 Credit Hours
GEOS 6534 - Advanced Geographic Information Systems 4 Credit Hours
Or other relevant courses upon approval from advisor.

Graduate Level Courses (11 Hours)

Remaining hours in student’s area of specialization chosen from graduate level courses

Capstone Track

All above requirements, except GEOS 8999 and thesis defense under section 1.
An additional 6 (or more) credits of GEOS graduate courses
Pass a written comprehensive examination
GEOS 8990 - Capstone Practicum 1 to 15 Credit Hours
Successfully present the capstone project carried out in GEOS 8990
