Admission Deadlines

Applications are considered for admission in the fall and spring semesters. The Application for Graduate Study, application fee, and all supporting materials (transcripts, letters, and Supplementary Form for Graduate Study in Neuroscience) must be received April 1 for applicants to the stand-alone M.S. program for Fall semester admission and October 1 for Spring semester admission.

Degree Requirements


Stand-Alone Master of Science in Neuroscience Degree Requirements (Minimum of 36 Credit Hours)


A minimum of 36 hours of graduate coursework is required for the stand-alone Master of Science degree in Neuroscience. To satisfy the minimum requirements for the degree, the student must complete successfully:

Graduate Classroom Coursework (27 Hours)


A minimum of 27 hours of graduate classroom coursework, which must include:
Neuroscience Core Course (4 Hours)

Core Elective Courses (6 Hours)

Select two courses from the following:
Quantitative Course Requirement (3-4 Hours)

Select one course from the following:
Responsible Conduct in Research (1 Hours)

Neuroscience Electives

Select a minimum of 12-13 hours, six of which must be 8000-level topics, concepts, and/or seminar courses; the remaining may be taken at the 6000-level.
Research Credits

A minimum of nine semester hours of research credit. For students in the non-thesis Master’s track, this requirement is satisfied by completing at least 5 credit hours of NEUR 8800 (Master’s Research) and/or NEUR 8810 (Directed Laboratory Study), and 4 credits of NEUR 8888 (Non-Thesis Master’s Research). For students in the thesis Master’s track, this requirement is satisfied by completing NEUR 8800 (Master’s Research), NEUR 8810 (Directed Laboratory Study) or NEUR 8999 (Master’s Thesis Research) credits; at least 6 of these credit hours must be in NEUR 8999. 

Written Product

A written product approved by the student’s Master’s Committee. Students have the option of defending a formal Master’s thesis, or of selecting the non-thesis option. In the latter case, students submit an empirical paper, literature review, methodological / technical paper, research proposal or other product with the approval of the Graduate Program Committee.

Master of Science en Route to Ph.D. Degree Requirements (Minimum of 36 Credit Hours)


A Master of Science is earned en route to the Neuroscience Ph.D. degree. A minimum of 36 hours of graduate coursework is required for the Master of Science Degree in Neuroscience. To satisfy the minimum requirements for the degree, the student must complete successfully:

  1. A minimum of 28 hours of graduate classroom coursework, which must include:

Core Elective Courses (6 Hours)


Select two courses from the following:

Quantitative Course Requirement (3-4 Hours)


Select one course from the following:

Neuroscience Electives


Select a minimum of 10-11 hours, six of which must be 8000-level topics, concepts, and/or seminar courses.

  1. A minimum of 8 semester hours of research credit. This requirement can be satisfied by enrolling in NEUR 8800 Master’s Research or the equivalent.
  2. A qualifying exam.

Students admitted for graduate study who have already taken relevant graduate classes or who are in possession of a graduate degree may be accorded advanced standing after an evaluation of previous graduate work. This evaluation would normally be conducted by the Director of Graduate Studies before entry into the program or at the very latest during the first semester of enrollment.
