Additional Admission Requirements
In addition to the general requirements of the College of the Arts, the School of Film, Media & Theatre has the following requirements:
Applicants to the Ph.D. program must submit:
- A statement of educational or career goals.
- Three letters of recommendation from individuals who can evaluate the applicant’s potential to do graduate work in Moving Image Studies.
- An above average undergraduate and master’s grade point average.
- Satisfactory scores on the General Test of the GRE
- For International students, the TOEFL Examination.
- A writing sample that demonstrates their ability to conduct and effectively present academic research.
NOTE: All applicants for the Moving Image Studies Ph.D. program must have earned a master’s degree before entering the program.
Applicants for the Ph.D. will be admitted in the fall only. The appliction deadline for fall admission is February 10 for Ph.D applicants. The school will not consider requests for Special Graduate Status admission.

Degree Requirements
Students must earn a grad of “B” or better in all required coursework. Minimum of 68 hours beyond the master’s degree. Doctor of Philosophy 36 Credit Hours
Research Tools
9 Hours Select nine credit hours from the following: Area of Concentration
33 Hours Select thirty-three credit hours in the area of concentration: Doctoral Writing
1 Hour - FLME 8113 Doctoral Comprehensive Exam 1 Credit Hour
Note: Course should be taken while completing the comprehensive examination Dissertation Research
20 Hours Dissertation
- A written and oral comprehensive examination
- A successful Prospectus defense
- A successful dissertation
- A successful dissertation defense
