Applied Mathematics Concentration

Concentration Requirements


1.  At least four courses from the Common Core courses (12 credit hours)

Students must take four of the following six common core courses (12 credit hours):

2. Foundational Courses (15 Hours)


The applied mathematics concentration requires that a student takes four PhD qualifying examinations covering four courses, with at least two from the Common Core (excluding MATH 9116) and the rest from the following foundational courses, with at least one exam in each of the three categories: Theory, Modeling, and Algorithms. Students must take at least five of the following foundational courses (15 credit hours, excluding four courses taken to satisfy Common Core):

  • MATH 8220 Abstract Algebra I 3 Credit Hours 
  • MATH 8110 Real Analysis I 3 Credit Hours 
  • MATH 8200 Advanced Matrix Analysis 3 Credit Hours 
  • MATH 8535 Applied Matrix Algebra 3 Credit Hours 
  • MATH 8510 Applied Math 3 Credit Hours 

 

Modeling

  • MATH 8500 Systems Biology 3 Credit Hours 
  • MATH 8505 Advanced Mathematical Biology 3 Credit Hours 
  • STAT 8561 Linear Statistical Analysis I 3 Credit Hours 
  • MATH 8515 Dynamical Foundations of Neuroscience 3 Credit Hours 
  • MATH 8560 Mathematical Physiology 3 Credit Hours 

 

Algorithms

  • MATH 8620 Numerical Linear Algebra 3 Credit Hours 
  • MATH 8610 Advanced Numerical Analysis 3 Credit Hours 
  • MATH 8525 - Applied Stochastic Processes 3 Credit Hours 
  • MATH 8520 - Applied Combinatorics and Graph Theory 3 Credit Hours 

3. At Least 27 Credit Hours


Students must take at least 27 credit hours that should be selected from other graduate level courses in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics and relevant courses from other departments (such as Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Neuroscience, and Physics) approved by the graduate director. The total number of required hours of coursework is 54.

4. Dissertation Research


At least 30 hours of MATH 9999 

  • MATH 9999 - Dissertation Research 1 to 18 Credit Hours
