Additional Admission Requirements
In addition to the general requirements of the College of the Arts, the School of Film, Media & Theatre has the following requirements:
Applicants to the Ph.D. program must submit:
- A statement of educational or career goals.
- Three letters of recommendation from individuals who can evaluate the applicant’s potential to do graduate work in Moving Image Studies.
- An above average undergraduate and master’s grade point average.
- Satisfactory scores on the General Test of the GRE
- International students, the TOEFL Examination).
- A writing sample that demonstrates their ability to conduct and effectively present academic research.
NOTE: All applicants for the Moving Image Studies Ph.D. program must have earned a master’s degree before entering the program.
Applicants for the Ph.D. will be admitted in the fall only. Deadline for application for fall admission is February 10 for Ph.D applicants. The school will not consider requests for Special Graduate Status admission.

Degree Requirements
(Minimum of 68 hours beyond the master’s degree)
- Required courses (5)
- FLME 8111 introduction to Graduate Studies (2)
- FLME 8035 Doctoral Colloquium in Communication Pedagogy (3)
- An additional thirty-three hours in area of concentration
- At least nine hours of research tools (approved courses that fall within the general categories of research methodologies)
- Twenty hours of FLME 9999 Dissertation Research
- A written and oral comprehensive examination, including registration for FLME 8113 Comprehensive Examination (1)
- A successful Prospectus defense
- A successful dissertation
- A successful dissertation defense
