The Master of Interdisciplinary Studies in World Languages Education program is designed for multilingual students who hold a bachelor’s degree and are seek an initial teaching certification in a world/ foreign language such as Chinese, French, German, Korean, or Spanish (grades kindergarten through 12th grade) with a master’s degree. This program leads to a teaching degree with a clear and renewable (T5) induction certificate in the state of Georgia with a step advance on the pay scale above the (T4) certification only.
The M.I.S. program includes coursework across units within the College of Education and Human Development Department of Middle and Secondary Education (WLE, ESOL, Urban Ed) and the Department of Early Childhood and Elementary Education (DLI, Urban Ed) and from the Colleges of Arts and Sciences (World Languages graduate coursework). This affords program graduates the opportunity to explore multidisciplinary teaching with the possibility of an endorsement (ESOL, DLI, Urban Education) or to deepen their mastery of the target language and cultures.
World Languages Education candidates are taught skills to (1) prepare their students to use second languages and (2) foster their learners’ global competence.
Program Admission
All applicants must meet the College of Education and Human Development’s requirements for admission to graduate study. Additional requirements specific to this program include:
- An undergraduate or graduate degree or the equivalent from a regionally accredited college or university with a minimum 2.5 undergraduate GPA
- Transcripts from all colleges/universities attended
- Successful completion of a Foreign Language content exam–either the GACE content exam or ACTFL OPI and WPT

Program Academic Regulations
Upon admission to a teacher education program, students will be contacted by the Office of Field Placements and Certification with instructions to claim enrollment in their program and submit a GaPSC Pre-Service Certificate Application. The pre-service certificate is required for placement in required field experiences or clinical practice.
Exit requirements for this program are:
- Completion of all program coursework with a grade point average of no less than 3.00,
- Successful completion of the teaching internships with a grade of “B” or higher, and
- Successful presentation of a professional portfolio.
Certification
Students in this program will be eligible to be recommended for Georgia initial certification after earning passing scores on the GACE Program Admission Assessment, GACE Content Assessment, Georgia Educator Ethics (360) Assessment, and successfully completing:
- All content courses recommended for each individual upon admission to the program;
- For Georgia Professional Standards Commission (GaPSC) certification requirements, students must earn a grade of “B” or higher in EXC 4020.;
- EXC 4020, EDCI 4650, EDCI 7660, EDCI 7670, EDCI 7680, FORL 6122 or WLC 6128, FORL 7125, FORL 7126; and
- Successful presentation of a professional portfolio.
