First-time, prospective students who want to apply for admission at the graduate level must refer to the college sections in this catalog for admission requirements of the particular graduate programs.
The graduate admissions process is coordinated by Graduate Admissions, The Graduate School, located in 55 Park Place (email gradapply@gsu.edu). Colleges, schools, and institutes are responsible for graduate admissions decisions. This applies to degree-seeking, non-degree seeking, and transient graduate applicants, except where noted and excludes the College of Law.
Georgia State University welcomes applications from all qualified individuals regardless of race, color, sex, religion, creed, age, sexual orientation, gender, disability, veteran status or national origin. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited, U.S. institution, or its equivalent, is required for entry into Georgia State’s graduate programs. Admission is based on a number of factors including, but not limited to, an applicant’s academic record, test scores, experience, circumstances, good conduct and character. Admission is a competitive, selective process and meeting minimum requirements does not guarantee acceptance.
Absent extenuating circumstances, good disciplinary standing at previously attended colleges and universities is a condition of admission for all applicants. For purposes of admission, good disciplinary standing means that the applicant has no pending disciplinary charges, outstanding disciplinary sanctions or disciplinary issues that would prevent the applicant from re-enrolling at previously attended postsecondary institutions.
Applicants with a criminal and/or disciplinary history who are determined to be otherwise admissible for a respective term based on their academic record and other credentials are required to complete an admissions background review process before an admission decision is made by the university. Instructions for completing that review process are communicated to the applicant after the university has determined that the applicant is otherwise admissible for that term.
Omissions or misrepresentations on an application for admission are grounds for automatically invalidating consideration by, acceptance to and continuation at Georgia State. Applicants have a duty to update their application with Georgia State when information changes after application submission.
1100.05 Minimum Degree Requirement
Georgia State University requires proof of a baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited U.S. institution or its international equivalent to enroll in a graduate program. Applicants who do not meet the minimum degree requirement but hold an advanced degree (graduate or professional) from a regionally accredited U.S. institution or its international equivalent may also be considered for admission.
Registered Nurses applying to the R.N. to M.S. Bridge program are exempt.
1100.10 Transcript Requirements
To be considered for admission, applicants must submit an official or unofficial transcript for each post-secondary institution attended.
Exceptions and substitutions may include:
- Transcripts for study abroad and non-degree programs may be waived entirely or temporarily.
- Professional evaluations may be accepted instead of transcripts. Evaluations must be submitted from the agency and must include a course-by-course evaluation or copies of official transcripts.
- Post-master’s certificate applicants may be considered for admission with only the master’s degree transcript.
If admission is offered, newly admitted students may only enroll once they submit proof of degree via an official or unofficial transcript. Exceptions include applicants exempt from the minimum degree requirement and newly admitted students completing their baccalaureate degree at Georgia State University. The Georgia State undergraduate degree must be conferred before the first day of class or the offer of admission shall expire.
Admission is conditioned upon submission of all official transcripts that confirm the information provided on the unofficial transcripts during the application process. Official transcripts must be received by Georgia State University no later than the first day of class, or the offer of admission shall expire.
If the Georgia State University semester begins before the applicant’s earlier degree is conferred, registration may be allowed. However, if proof of degree is not subsequently submitted tuition and fees will remain due but courses may not be counted towards a degree.
