Requirement: A minimum grade of “C” is required for this course.This is the third of three courses that prepare teacher candidates to develop the literacy of students in diverse urban classrooms. In this course, candidates study interrelated components of literacy and interdisciplinary learning as well as discipline-specific literacy processes, with a focus on reading/writing in social studies. Candidates select and use high quality informational texts as models to support student reading and writing of discipline-specific texts. They integrate culturally and linguistically responsive teaching strategies to build on students’ background knowledge and become familiar with principles and processes of democratic, problem-solving, project-based education through participation in a problem-solution project.
