PHPB 7025 - Health Disparities

3 Credit Hours
Description
This course will examine the social, political, and economic context of health disparities among racial/ethnic groups and other disenfranchised subgroups (e.g., the poor, uninsured, non-English speaking populations). This course is not intended to provide the answers to the multitude of problems associated with health disparities. Rather, it is intended to increase students’ knowledge base and encourage discussion about health disparities. Students from a variety of disciplinary backgrounds will be presented with tools to conduct research on and utilize intervention strategies to reduce health disparities. Emphasis will be placed on: 1) the conceptualization and measurement of health disparities, 2) examination of empirical evidence for disparities, and 3) understanding the practical and strategic importance of developing policy with regard to disparities.
