NURS 7879 - Global Perspective on Social Determinants of Health 3 Credit Hours Prerequisites: Prerequisites/Corequisites: None. Description Course Description: This course will serve as a 3-credit hour elective. In this course, students will identify the complex challenges of social determinants of health in local communities and prepare as future leaders to develop effective solutions. Students will discuss the intersection of social, economic, and environmental determinants of health and the way these determinants shape access to health care, water, sanitation, and food. The students will review current literature to identify social determinants of health for the population and explore possible health promotion activities currently being implemented and their impact on cardiovascular health. This two-week course is available to undergraduate and graduate students interested in nursing, health sciences, sociology, anthropology, and pan African studies. The program will include class discussions, current literature reviews on social determinants of health , visits to local health clinics, local student engagements (health sciences, community public health), formal and informal interviews with community leaders, windshield survey, visits to historic sites, and local markets.
