EDRD 8300 - Theory and Curriculum Development in Inclusive Literacy Instruction

Description
The focus of this course is on the major theoretical, conceptual, historical, and evidence-based components of literacy development and instruction with a specific focus on the role of the literacy specialist as a school leader who can support, advocate, and advance the literacy growth of all learners within the school community. Students will analyze various reading curriculum and instruction programs to discern their theoretical underpinnings and alignment with educational goals and standards pertaining to literacy development. Furthermore, students will critique the strengths and weaknesses of these programs, evaluating their effectiveness in meeting educational goals and standards. Drawing upon this analysis, students will create action plans for improvement tailored to the unique needs of their school community, with a focus on supporting, advocating for, and advancing literacy growth for all learners. In essence, possessing this knowledge enables literacy specialists to be effective leaders, advocates, and practitioners in the field of literacy education, ultimately contributing to improved literacy outcomes for all students.
