EDRD 8450 - Literacy Development and Instruction for Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Students

3 Credit Hours
Description
This course is designed to prepare you to be successful and reflective literacy teachers of linguistically and culturally diverse students. The guiding philosophy of the course is that good teachers of literacy position themselves as kidwatchers (Goodman, 2002; Mills, 2005) and facilitators of all children’s pluralistic and expansive language and literacy development. They are reflective about their own literate histories in addition to recognizing the variety of ways that children from diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds engage in and develop literate practices. In this course, we explore theories and pedagogies that are especially effective in supporting the developing language and literacy practices of culturally and linguistically diverse learners.
