The Department of Early Childhood and Elementary Education offers a variety of degree programs to prepare teachers, community and school leaders, and scholars in the field of early childhood and elementary education. Candidates gain extensive content knowledge, hone innovative teaching methods and develop a disposition that enables them to work effectively within diverse classrooms. Teaching and learning are continually practiced in clinical experiences where collaboration with school partners is valued. Undergraduate students may choose to focus on careers working with young children, birth through kindergarten or teaching in Pre-K through 5th grade classrooms, with special expertise in teaching English language learners and students with disabilities. Graduate programs and teaching endorsements develop candidates’ skills as master teachers, creative and innovative community leaders and curriculum innovators. The urban accelerated certification and master’s program offers an alternative route to certification for individuals holding degrees in fields other than education. Doctoral programs offer candidates opportunities to develop skills in research, university level teaching and curriculum leadership, working alongside faculty scholars in areas such as urban education, literacy, STEM and teacher development.
