The Department of Chemistry at Georgia State University offers M.S. in Chemistry, M.S. in Chemical Education, and Ph.D. degrees in Chemistry. A B.S./M.S. dual degree option is also available to current undergraduate students at Georgia State University.
We have a dynamic faculty conducting multi-disciplinary research at the interface of chemistry, biology, physics, and computer science. Active research programs are pursued in analytical chemistry, organic/medicinal chemistry, biophysical/computational chemistry, chemical education, and biochemistry. The department currently brings in several million dollars in external research funds annually.
M.S. students admitted to our graduate program typically receive waived tuition and a $6,000 annual stipend to offset health insurance, fees, and partial cost of living. Ph.D. students typically receive waived tuition and $30,000 annual stipend. Support is contingent on students remaining in good academic standing and maintaining satisfactory progress towards the degree. Inquiries concerning assistantships and other support should be made to the Director of Graduate Studies in the Department of Chemistry. Several prestigious fellowships and assistantships are awarded by the department to outstanding students, including the Ambrose Pendergrast Fellowship, the David Withers Boykin Graduate Fellowship in Medicinal Chemistry, the Al Baumstark Award in Chemistry, the Robert “Pete” Pullen Family Scholarship in Analytical Chemistry, and the Harry P. Hopkins, Jr. Scholarship in Physical Chemistry. In addition, graduate fellowships are offered in Molecular Basis of Disease (MBD) and Brains and Behavior (BB) research areas.
The Department of Chemistry accepts applications on a rolling basis for all semesters. However, prospective students are encouraged to apply ahead of the priority deadline for Fall admissions, typically December 1st of the previous year.
Applicants are encouraged to read the Frequently Asked Questions page before applying. Additional information about the Department of Chemistry can be obtained by contacting the Director and Associate Directors of Graduate Studies at chemgradstudent@gsu.edu.
